In fact lumpia is a kind ofpastries of Chinese origin similar to spring rolls so popular in S.E. Asia. The term lumpia, both fried and fresh versions, derives from lunpia in the Hokkien language, was brought by the Chinese immigrants from the Fujianprovince of China and became popular where they settled in S.E. Asia. In the Netherlands , it is spelled loempia which is the old Indonesian spelling for lumpia and has also become the generic name for "spring roll " in Dutch . A variant is the Vietnamese lumpia, wrapped in a thinner piece of pastry, in a size close to a spring roll though the wrapping closes the ends off completely, which is typical for lumpia.Loempias are filled with Taugeh, bean sprouts, chopped omelette, and sliced ham.
Fried spring rolls or as they are called in Germany: Frhlingsrollen, are generally smaller and crispier. They can be sweet or savory; the latter are typically prepared with meat or vegetables. This version is fully wrapped before being pan fried or deep fried.
This sauce is a typical Dutch creation out of an Indonesian style demand to give the dish a special oriental taste, as a dipping sauce, over all kinds of snacks, or even over the complete dish.
